Matthew 5:5 Step 3. Meek Does NOT Mean Weak
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Roll over and be walked on? Hardly. Meekness is not weakness. They may rhym but that’s about where the similarities end. Meekness is Power under Control. And if we are Christ followers, meekness is power under Gods control ultimately. Power under God’s control means two things: (1) refusal to inflate our own self; and (2) refusal to assert ourselves for ourselves. I recently watched someone very dear to me talk in a Facebook or Instagram story about not seeking revenge or judging others for abusing the people in their lives, but having empathy for them and letting God be the judge. She had the power to judge those people and to make their life hell. She could have wrecked their lives or spoke love and change into their lives and left the rest to God. She chose love. That is our roll. She is meek. She showed extreme power under control. When Jesus spoke the sermon on the mount and gave us step 3, he was quoting psalm 37:11 which actually says, “ But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.” When we have that power under control and we refuse to assert ourselves for ourselves; when we mourn our own sin (see step 2) and we let God handle the misdeeds of others instead of taking justice into our own hands, we are free to use our power to serve others instead (because let’s face it, when we are sorrowful over our own sins we can’t really be vengeful over other’s sins). Then we can live in the abundant peace that can only be had when we have Jesus. Unless you have it, you won’t understand it. It’s a peace that transcends your deepest darkest fears, sorrows, any nightmare. It will hold you up through life’s hardest moments and will make the brightest days even brighter. The earth belongs to the meek. they are the ones who can enjoy it. They are not floundering about seeking power and revenge. They truly have the secret to happiness. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
