Matthew 5:3 Step 1: You Need Jesus
Matthew 5:3 tells me that Jesus said “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” That’s all well and good but what if you don’t have the foggiest idea what that means? And why would you want your spirit to be poor anyway? Everywhere we look we are told to be bold, make a statement, be ourselves and be fierce! Stand up for what’s right! So to be told by Jesus to be poor in spirit just sounds so completely opposite, doesn’t it? Let’s take a look. to be poor in spirit actually means the opposite of self sufficiency. So right there I’m going to say a big Yup! That’s about what I thought. Opposite of the world. Not sure that’s going to fly here on earth and may even get me in a few arguments. But upon further study I find that it also means to recognize my utter spiritual bankruptcy without God. To know that I am completely lost and can do absolutely nothing and am hopeless without His grace. Ahhhh. That’s truth. And then Jesus says, “theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” YES! Because when we KNOW we have to have saving grace we come into a place where all we want, all we need is Jesus. And we fall on Him and rely on Him. And He becomes our master and Lord. And that, my friends, is the key to salvation. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” ~ Jesus
