Matthew 5:13 What Kind of Salt are You?

“You are the salt of the eart, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under peoples feet.”

Pure salt cannot lose its flavor. BUT it can be contaminated. The salt of the Dead Sea area where Jesus was teaching at the time was full of gypsum and other minerals making it in effective as a preservative and having a flat taste, so it was thrown it was throw into the road to be walked on and to keep the weeds from growing. If we are the salt of the earth, and if we are pure, we are reflecting the pureness of God, holy and true. But when we let the things of this world interfere with that, we become less effective, less able to be Jesus to others. Ever tasted pure salt? Ever tasted salt mixed with cumin? Doesn’t taste like salt! To be effective, to be salt of the earth, we must stay true and pure. How? Well first we have to realize what we are not, and that is God. That way we can come to the Father in all humility when we do mess up and ask forgiveness and let the great physician heal us and purify us. We will never be perfect until we are in heaven. Now that we have got that out of the way, we are to be salt to the world - showing others what it is like to live a pure and holy life. That is a hard thing to do. Does it mean doing things that sometimes don’t make sense? Yes. Does it mean doing hard things? Yes. Stay in the word. Pray all the time!! And DON’T GIVE UP. It doesn’t always make sense but the end is always worth it. We serve a God who knows what He is doing and we just get to trust Him! There is a great sense of peace that comes when we can do that. “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under peoples feet.”
